Things you can’t clean with vinegar

Distilled white vinegar is often promoted as a natural and nontoxic alternative to high-priced brand-name cleaning products. And while it can get rid of the mineral buildup in your coffee maker, Consumer Reports warns that it’s not an all-purpose cleaner.

Never add vinegar to the tank of a steam iron; it can eat away at the protective coating inside the chamber and cause permanent damage, CR warns.

You can use vinegar to clean the plastic and glass surfaces on most small appliances, such as blenders, toasters, and coffee makers. But CR says, avoid any rubber parts or metal – including stainless steel – that vinegar can corrode.

When properly diluted, vinegar is a great window cleaner. But don’t use it to clean the screens on TVs, computers, tablets, smartphones, or other electronic devices. It can damage the anti-glare coating, or even make a touch screen less responsive.

Vinegar can also dissolve the finish that protects hardwood floors, and etch natural stone countertops which will dull down the shine.
