Bird flu detected in Pierce County

The latest outbreak of avian influenza is in two backyard flocks in Pierce County, according to the State Department of Agriculture.

The department says they are already working to contain the outbreak through quarantine and euthanization.

But the state didn’t go into detail about where in Pierce County the outbreak happened.

“It’s not about knowing exactly where that last detection is,” says state veterinarian Dr. Amber Itle. “It’s about understanding that our risk is everywhere in the state. So anywhere there’s wild birds, there’s risk of avian influenza.”

The state wants anyone who finds a dead bird to call the WSDA reporting hotline at 1-800-606-3056 or use Washington State Department of Fish and Wildlife’s online reporting tool.

No human cases have been linked to this latest outbreak.
