Part of I-5 in Everett closed all weekend

(EVERETT) As work to Revive I-5 in Seattle wraps up for the season, another chapter begins in the North Sound.

This job isn’t about expansion joints like the Sealtte project. In the North Sound, the issue is worn concrete panels on the again freeway.

“This is the first of three straight weekends we have planned in Everett to replace concrete on Northbound I-5,” says Tom Pearce with the Washington State Department of Transportation. “The panels out there are more than 50 years old and some of them are starting to break. By replacing them now during a planned closure, we can avoid some emergency work.”

Which could happen in the middle of rush hour during the week.

Instead. northbound I-5 will be narrowed to just two northbound lanes starting at Lowell Road through Everett Avenue. Two exits will also be closed for the weekend work, which begins tonight at 8, and continues through early Monday morning.

While the main Broadway exit will be closed, the Broadway carpool exit will be open to all vehicles. Pearce cautions against the temptation to use it and downtown Everett Streets to avoid the delays on the freeway.

“If people try to get off and use city streets to get around, we’re just going to clog city streets, and that’s not good for anybody,” he tells Northwest Newsradio.

Instead, he suggests you use State Route 9 to get around the construction.
