(WASHINGTON DC) While we don’t know how many cases there are at Washington bases, the U-S Military says it’s investigating nearly 200 cases of “domestic extremism.”
In the first report of its kind issued this week, The Navy Times reports that there were 211 reported incidents between October 2021 and September of this year, and that its investigating 183 of these cases.
The number of cases was likely sparked by political unrest, and because the Pentagon has expanded it’s definition.
Domestic Extremism used to just prohibit enlisted service members from politically organizing, fundraising, or proselytizing. Since the January 6, 2021 incident at the U-S Capitol, it has been expanded to include social media posts that promote extremist views.
As a result of these investigations, 48 service members were punished by the military, while 112 case were referred to local law enforcement for further investigation.
