The State Senate’s version of the bill to require safety training before buying a gun is now up for debate.
That certified firearms safety training, a background check and a 10 day waiting period are already required to buy a semi-automatic rifle, so Senate Bill 5232 would expand those requirements to all firearms purchases.
Donita Sinclair, whose son, Lorenzo Anderson, was killed at Seattle’s Capitol Hill Occupied Protest, pleaded with the Law and Justice Committee as a parent. “Our community worldwide has been impacted by this disease,” Sinclair says, “I’m just telling you as a mother. I’m in here on emotions. We need you guys to take charge…take responsibility.”
Brian Colclough with the Black Gun Owners Association says the bill, if passed, would infringe on people’s 2nd Amendment rights and disproportionately impact law-abiding citizens. Colclough says, “It will not effectively address the root causes of violence. Instead, it would impose burdensome regulations on responsible gun owners and potentially make our communities less safe.”
The bill gets its first committee vote in a week.
