AG Ferguson announces run for governor…sort of

(SEATTLE, Wash.) — In a video released Tuesday morning, Attorney General Bob Ferguson announced an “exploratory campaign” for governor.

Ferguson has been eying the governorship for some time. He toyed with the idea in 2020, but backed down once Jay Inslee announced he was seeking a third term.

With no incumbent in the race this time around, Ferguson becomes the first major Democrat to declare.

But exploratory committees are not recognized entities under Washington election law. The Public Disclosure Commission says a candidate is either in or out, nothing in between.

The campaign filed with the PDC late Tuesday morning, though no information was included on ho much money they have raised, if any.

Ferguson’s campaign video was a slickly-produced, three-and-a-half minute piece that highlighted his record as Attorney General. Much of it focused on his lawsuits against the Trump Administration, for which Republicans gave him the nickname “Bobby Sue.”

The video was released less than 24 hours after Jay Inslee announced he would not seek a fourth term.
