New Fireworks Ban in Snohomish County gaining Traction

Fireworks are banned in portions of Snohomish County, But not the sale in those same locations.

“We just went through another fireworks laden 4th of July” Bill Lider gave the county council an earful this week  “Fireworks use was even greater than it was when the ban went into effect in 2020” and he continued lobbying for a change in the law.

Over the 4th of July holiday, 911 dispatchers received more than 28-hundred calls.  There were 68 brush fires, but none involving homes. $500 fines are the max, but offenders are rarely cited “I’m interested in broadening this ordinance” councilmember Strom Pederson “To look at a look at a countywide ban given constituents complaints about fireworks usage this year.”

Of the 34 fireworks stands doing business this 4th of July, half were near Lynnwood where setting off fireworks is against the law “The sheriffs department is simply not capable” Lider continued his hard sell for a new law “Not capable of responding to all of the fireworks due to the insane policy of allowing the sale of fireworks that are already illegal.”

A patchwork of bans dot the county, but critics argue fireworks are often used where they’re bought.  The Snohomish County Council is expected to consider a change in the law on August 8, 2023.
