July 29th in history.  In 1786, the first newspaper west of the Alleghenies, The Pittsburgh Gazette, was published—it’s still in print today as The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. In 1958, Congress authorized the creation of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, better known as NASA. Ice cream lovers may remember that in 1987, Ben & Jerry’s debuted “Cherry Garcia” in honor of Grateful Dead’s Jerry Garcia. Swimming legend Michael Phelps set a new world record in 2009 at the World Championships in Rome, winning the 200-meter butterfly in 1:51.51. In 2010, President Barack Obama made history as the first sitting U.S. president to appear on a daytime talk show, The View. Fast forward to 2016, Hillary Clinton shattered a political glass ceiling by accepting the Democratic nomination for president—the first woman to do so. And 40 years ago today, in 1985, the number one song in the country was Duran Duran’s James Bond anthem, “A View to a Kill.” A notable blend of headlines, music, and milestones. That’s today’s Almanac, on Northwest Newsradio.
