On this day in 1789, the French Revolution began, an uprising now remembered as Bastille Day. In 1868, Alvin Fellows of Connecticut patented the tape measure, changing tool kits forever. CBS made history in 1951 by broadcasting the first color TV coverage of a sporting event—a horse race. In 1981, The Go-Go’s released Beauty and the Beat, which spent six weeks at No. 1 on the U.S. charts. In 1987, baseball renamed its Rookie of the Year Awards in honor of Jackie Robinson.
