October 3. On this day in history, the Federal Income Tax was signed into law in 1913. In 1922, Rebecca Felton of Georgia became the first woman to serve in the U.S. Senate. In 1964, The Animals’ debut album featuring “The House of the Rising Sun” entered the charts. In 1989, Art Shell became the first Black head coach in modern NFL history. In 1992, Barack Obama married Michelle Robinson in Chicago. In 2011, Amanda Knox was freed after four years in an Italian prison when her conviction was overturned. In 2023, Kevin McCarthy became the first U.S. House Speaker ever voted out of office.
