September 19. On this day in history, 1952, Adventures of Superman starring George Reeves soared onto American TV screens. That same year, Charlie Chaplin was barred from re-entering the U.S. after a trip to England, marking a tense moment in Hollywood's Cold War politics. In 1959, Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev was famously denied a visit to Disneyland. Fast forward to 1982, when Carnegie Mellon's Scott Fahlman typed out ":-)", giving birth to the modern emoticon. In 1989, Janet Jackson dropped Rhythm Nation 1814, a powerhouse album that would go on to win major awards. And in 2021, RuPaul made history, becoming the most decorated Black artist in Emmy history with his 11th win for RuPaul’s Drag Race. A mix of pop culture, politics, and digital history — all on this day. And that’s today’s Almanac, on Northwest Newsradio.
