UW researchers looking for Long COVID identifiers, treatments

Research done in a local lab has found some of the most common symptoms of “Long COVID”, but that’s just the start.

The study hopes to answer two questions: what are the defining symptoms of Long COVID? And are certain people more likely to develop Long COVID?

Jenni Logue, a researcher in the lab of infectious disease specialist, Doctor Helen Chu at the University of Washington, says of the roughly 200 symptoms identified with Long COVID, there are 37 symptoms participants who had COVID reported more often than those who never had COVID, “and then within those they further identified 12 symptoms that they thought identified participants with Long COVID,” Logue says, “There are still other symptoms that are associated with [the condition].”

Logue tells Northwest Newsradio Long COVID can really affect people’s quality of life and ability to function.  Logue says, “This is really something that we are interested in learning more about so that we can help all of these individuals get back to as normal a life as possible.”  That means trying to find some way or ways to treat Long COVID, eventually with clinical trials like the one Logue says Stanford has going to test Paxlovid as a treatment for Long COVID.

For now, they need volunteers to help with this study.  You can go to the study web page for more information.
