How to decide whether to get a second Covid-19 booster shot?

The FDA and the CDC have given permission for anyone 50 or older, and otherwise in good health, to get a second Pfizer or Moderna booster shot as early as four months after a first booster of any of the three approved Covid vaccines.

“Do we all need to get it right now? Well, the CDC didn’t recommend it. They just said it’s available and you can get it,” said Dr. John Swartzberg, an expert on infectious diseases at the UC Berkeley School of Public health.

Dr. Swartzberg says everyone needs to consider several factors when deciding what to do, including how much virus is circulating in your community, your current health, and what you plan to do.

He suggested asking yourself these two key questions:

Do you have other risk factors that if you got really sick with COVID, it might tip you over and throw you in the hospital or perhaps even kill you? Or are you otherwise really in robust health and don’t have any of those risk factors?

What is the chance of you getting infected? Are you doing things that put you at risk for getting infected or are you being really careful wearing that mask when you go into the grocery store, for example?

Health experts say the first round of booster shots are working, but immunity does wane over time, and another shot can provide a temporary boost that’s important for those over 50.
