Survey: Local veterinarians charge widely different prices for the same procedures

Checkbook.org is out with its ratings of local veterinarians. Most got high marks for competency, advice, and spending time with patients.

Checkbook’s undercover shoppers also compared prices.

“We found these massive price differences where some practices charge three times more than others for really the same care,” said Kevin Brasler, Checkbook’s executive editor.

One example: The price for neutering a six-month old, 30-pound dog (no hospitalization required) ranged from $209 to $982.

“There’s no relationship between quality and price,” Brasler told me. “We found that the vets that get really high ratings from their customers for quality of care are just as likely to offer low prices as they are high prices. So, you can’t assume that a higher price is going to mean better care. You should seek out the best veterinary practices, but also make sure you’re not overpaying.”

Checkbook is an independent, non-profit, subscriber-based consumer rating and education service. As a courtesy to NW Newsradio listeners, the ratings for more than 200 veterinarians in the Puget Sound area are available through this special link until April 30, 2022. Advice on choosing a vet is always available at Checkbook.org
