Does apple cider vinegar have medicinal properties?

Apple cider vinegar’s zesty flavor adds tang to a variety of foods, but can it improve your health?

If you believe the ads on social media, apple cider vinegar can help lower your cholesterol, control blood sugar, even improve your skin. It’s also widely promoted as something that will help you lose weight.

“I mean, it sounds too good to be true. And unfortunately, it probably is not true,” said Dr. John Swartzberg, head of the editorial board at the UC Berkeley Wellness Letter.

The Wellness Letter looked for any scientific studies that support the claims that apple cider vinegar can help with weight loss.

“And there’s very, very little data there,” Dr. Swartzberg told me. “So, if you like the taste of apple cider vinegar, throw it on your salad. That’s great. But don’t take it because you think it’s going to help you lose weight, or it’s going to take care of your blood sugar, or take care of your cholesterol, or make your skin look really pretty.”

Something else to consider: If you drink a lot of apple cider vinegar without diluting it first, the high acidity could erode the enamel on your teeth.
