King County Sheriff’s candidates hold final public forum

The three candidates for King County Sheriff again took questions from the community Thursday, with topics that included how they’d change the department’s culture and how they’d retain deputies and other employees.

Interim Sheriff Patti Cole-Tindall says engaging with her team is key because just sitting in her office adds no value.  “The value,” Cole-Tindall says, “is meeting with the troops, hearing what they want, hearing what they need, and then how can I, as the leader, respond to that.”

Killeen, Texas, Police Chief Charles Kimball says it takes experience, and as an “agent of change”, he says that change takes patience.  “There will be resistance,” Kimball says, “so you have to be prepared for resistance and you have to be able to speak to the needs of the people.”

Atlanta Police Major Reginald Moorman says people see the bad things in policing, so you have to highlight the good things, but he says you also have to set clear expectations so that people know the rules, “and those expectations come from the community,” Moorman says.  “What does the community expect from their Sheriff’s Office?  What does the community expect from their Sheriff?”

County Executive Dow Constantine is expected to make his selection in early May.  He’ll then forward his nomination to the County Council for confirmation.  The new King County Sheriff is expected to be in the job by summer.
