Pierce Co. Council approves ‘safe lots’

(TACOMA, Wash) — The Pierce County Council has voted to allow ‘safe lots’ on church property and elsewhere throughout the county.

These lots would be a place for those living in cars and RVs to park their vehicles somewhere other than on public streets.

However, the number of lots that are not associated with religious institutions would be limited to just four. Council chair Derek Young said he was uneasy with the special treatment given to churches, synagogues, and mosques, but supported the measure because it is only a pilot program.

The bill is a revision to a previous measure vetoed by county executive Bruce Dammeier, who argued the proposal would allow such lots to set up near schools and day cares.

The council vote on the new legislation was unanimous.
