Is vaping healthier than cigarettes? UW study says “kind of.”

(SEATTLE) Some new research from the University of Washington indicates that younger smokers who switch to vaping may end up living healthier lives.

But its not because vaping is safer or necessarily better for you.

The research looked at behaviors beyond the act of how you take in nicotine.

Doctor Rick Kosterman, who lead the study, says using e-cigarettes instead of traditional tobacco alone isn’t necessarily going to make you healthier.  But vaping CAN prompt you to do other healthy activities.

The UW study found of the 156 participants, 64% smoked only combustible cigarettes at age 39, 28% smoked and vaped, and 8% only vaped. The roughly one third of the group that shifted to vaping some or all the time by age 39 reported better physical health, exercised more and had more active social engagement.

Kosterman told the Seattle Times “Although the study cannot show a causal relationship, we think that because e-cigarettes have less stigma, less odor and are less physically harmful, they may increase health-promoting opportunities among smokers.”
