Will I-90 issue delay Eastside light rail?

(SEATTLE) Light rail service between Seattle and Bellevue was supposed to begin next year, but the date will likely be pushed further into the future after a problem was discovered on a key bridge.

The problem was brought to the attention of a Sound Transit committee during a meeting yesterday.

Jon Lebo, head of the project, revealed three different concrete track supports on the I-90 floating bridge had deteriorated. This only affected the part of the bridge supporting light rail tracks, and not the general traffic lanes.

But it is of enough concern that Sound Transit wants to not only make repairs, but make sure the issue isn’t more widespread.

It could be the latest setback for Eastside light rail after problems were discovered in concrete supports near the new planned station in Seattle’s International District.

The 3.7 BILLION light rail to the Eastside project was supposed to open next year, but ongoing issue could postpone opening the line until 2024.
