(WHIDBEY ISLAND) A receptacle in Langley, Washington is destined to become the most talked-about trash can in the Northwest.

The city has found a unique way to honor it’s newest, and perhaps, most famous friend.

Recently retired late night TV host Conan O’Brien was in town late last week with his wife for the premiere of her new play. Liza Powel O’Brien’s “Apostrophe” premiered last week at the Whidbey Island Center for the Arts.

“We’re very excited for her, and very very appreciative that Whidbey is so welcoming,” O’Brien told the small crowd in a video captured by YouTube user Craig Cyr.

The second reason Conan O’Brien was in town?  The city dedicated something unique to the former late night host.  Resident Basil Hassoun read the proclamation giving late night’s longest serving host’s name to the city’s longest serving trash can.

“Who better to symbolize our sleepy retirement community than the man who spent his career putting our people to sleep,” Houssan read.

The remark was followed by several groans from the crowd, while the famous comedian laughed.

O’Brien was so moved, he fired back.

“When I accepted this, I thought Whidbey was the fourth largest island in the contiguous United States. And then I find out after I’ve already accepted the award that you’re the fourth longest.”

The comic drew a caricature of himself on the trash can’s lid with a black Sharpie, and signed it “What an honor. Your new friend” and then his john Hancock.

“Seriously, you have a lovely community and we promise to come back,” O’Brien said. “And thank you all very very much from the bottom of our hearts.”
