We all know that using sunscreen can reduce your risk of skin damage and skin cancer. That said, some people are concerned about the chemical ingredients used as a UV filters, such as oxybenzone, may be absorbed through the skin.
“And though that sounds really scary, most dermatologists and the FDA are saying that it is not a reason to not wear sunscreen,” said Trisha Calvo deputy editor for health and food at Consumer Reports. “It’s very important to wear sunscreen. Those risks are known, the risks of the sun, whereas just because the chemicals are being absorbed doesn’t necessarily mean that that’s harmful.”
While the FDA has called for more research on these chemicals, it has not called them unsafe.
Even so, the American Academy of Pediatrics does advise parents not to use sunscreens containing oxybenzone on their children.
You can find good sunscreens without oxybenzone. Consumer Reports tested 52 sunscreens this year – lotions and sprays – and only three products had it.
Mineral or natural sunscreens don’t have these chemical UV filters. They use titanium dioxide or zinc oxide. But Consumer Reports tests show they may provide less protection.
