When the kids head back to school in a few weeks, many will find things back to normal – no more social distancing or masking. Many parents and educators see that as a positive step.
Public health experts hope parents remember that Covid has not gone away.
“We know that we’re dealing with a very contagious form of this virus, the most contagious form that we’ve seen since the beginning of the pandemic,” said Dr. John Swartzberg, an expert on infectious disease at the UC Berkeley School of Public Health. “With the resumption of school, lots of kids being in an enclosed space indoors for prolonged periods of time, there is the risk of significant outbreaks occurring.”
With Covid protocols gone, it’s going to be up to parents to protect their kids and the others in the classroom. And that, health expert say, means being vaccinated.
“The most important thing parents can do to protect their children from Covid and to keep them healthy is to get them vaccinated,” Dr. Swartzberg said. “Not enough parents have had their children vaccinated to give them the protection they really require.”
Remember, it takes about two weeks after getting the Covid vaccine to develop full immunity to the Coronavirus.
