Top-rated smart thermostats from Consumer Reports

Programmable thermostats have been around for decades. They’re a great way to save energy on heating or cooling your house – if you take the time to set up the scheduling.

Consumer Reports says smart thermostats, those that have built-in wireless connections, might be “a worthwhile upgrade.”

A basic smart thermostat lets you adjust the temperature from an app, More sophisticated models have a motion sensor or use geo-tagging (to check the location of your mobile phone) to determine when the house is empty. High-end models try to learn your habits and routines to keep your house at a comfortable temperature.

Consumer Reports has tested 50 smart thermostats, and most of the models that get high ratings have a motion sensor, geo-tagging, or both.

Based on its lab tests, CR recommends three models:

  • Google Nest Learning Thermostat (overall score 83 out of 100)
  • ecobee Smart with Voice Control EB-STATe5-01 (scored 73)
  • Honeywell Home T9 RCHT9510WF (score 73)
