Getting Covid increases the risk of serious brain problems, study finds

A new report provides one more good reason to prepare for the long winter months ahead by getting the updated Covid booster shot.

Researchers at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis analyzed federal health data, and found that those who got Covid had an increased risk of brain problems in the first year after the infection. The findings were just published in Nature Medicine.

“I don’t think people really appreciate the consequences of developing long Covid, said Dr. John Swartzberg, an expert on infectious diseases at the UC Berkely School of Public Health. “Even a mild case of COVID, you can develop neurological problems, and some of these can be very serious.”

While Dr. Swartzberg was not involved in this research, he’s familiar with the problems that can result from long Covid.

“When people think of the neurological problems from Covid, they often think of brain fog, memory problems. And that’s true, those are some common ones,” he said. “But some things can be even much more dangerous,” he said.

These complications include strokes, cognitive and memory problems, depression, anxiety, migraine headaches, and seizures.
