(SUNNYSIDE) New leadership is being sought after the police chief in Sunnyside is fired, and a commander is suspended.
“I have not come to this decision lightly, but ultimately believe my decision best serves the interests of the police department, the city as a whole, and the community of Sunnyside,” city manager Elizabeth Alba said in a written statement.
Yesterday, Alba fired Sunnyside’s chief for the past 8 years, and suspended a commander, citing too much crime, too many officer-involved shootings, and misconduct within the department.
In her written comments, she said she didn’t trust department leadership in the small city just a half hour southeast of Yakima. She did not give anything more specific about firing the chief, or the suspension of the commander.
Alba was named permanent city manager in April of this year after serving as interim manager for a bout 12 months. She’s the first female city manager ever in Sunnyside.
