This is the time of year to get deals on home appliances – dishwashers, ranges, refrigerators, washers and dryers. So, what can you expect this Black Friday week?
A market survey by Consumer Reports finds that savings on major home appliances will be “deeper and more widespread” this year than in the past two years – with discounts of 25% or more.
Chances are you won’t see as many doorbuster deals, with 40% off savings. Stores don’t need to slash prices that low to move the merchandise they have. Even so, CR says retailers do have more merchandise in stock than in the past two years.
You might be able to get a better deal if you haggle a bit. When CR surveyed its members recently, it found that 23% of those shopping for a major appliance negotiated for a better price – and two thirds succeeded – saving a median of $119.
Successful negotiators said they went online to compare offers from competitors before heading to the store. They also asked for added discounts, such as those for seniors, veterans, or some sort of membership discount.
Or maybe they’ll waive the delivery charge or installation fee. You’ve got nothing to lose by asking.
One more option: Ask for a discount on the floor model. It may have a scratch or two, but should come with the full warranty.
