State lawmakers convene in Olympia

(OLYMPIA, Wash.) — State lawmakers have gathered in Olympia for the 2023 legislative session.

Among the issues they’ll have to deal with are reforming drug laws, addressing the Blake Decision, and agreeing on a budget.

But Senate Republican Leader John Braun says tax relief will be a priority for his caucus. “Whether it’s gas tax relief or sales tax relief, [it will be] something that affects all Washingtonians,” he told TVW.

Democrats have their own list of priorities, however.

Speaker of the House Laurie Jinkins told the public affairs network housing and homelessness issues as well as public safety will be top of their list.

Monday’s proceedings were largely ceremonial, as members were sworn in and the rules for each chamber approved. Most of the committee work gets underway on Tuesday.
