US Education Secretary Miguel Cardona made a couple of stops in Western Washington Friday, where he talked about the value of hands-on trade education and student loan debt relief.

Cardona visited the Seattle Maritime Academy, where he successfully “docked” a Washington State ferry using the school’s simulator and where he says that type of real world education has great value for students and the economy. “You know, that simulator was a good experience. So, for a lot of students, it opens their eyes to what’s possible,” Cardona says, “You know, when you’re younger…you may not know that this exists here.” Some younger students will get the opportunity to find out what’s at Seattle Maritime Academy as Maritime High School in Des Moines builds a relationship that allows some of its students to see what happens at the Academy.
Secretary Cardona said we still have to wait for the Supreme Court when Northwest Newsradio’s Ryan Harris asked him if the Biden Administration’s promise of student loan debt relief would ever be a reality, but he says the President has long said the student loan system is broken. Cardona says, “Access to higher education is often times predicted by race and place. We have to change that. There’s so much talent in this country that we have to make sure are having access to higher education, and since day 1, we’ve provided over $65 billion dollars in loan approved forgiveness.” Cardona says the Administration will continue to fight for students who need that help, also pointing to some elected officials he says have received hundreds of thousands of dollars in loan forgiveness but then argued against someone who might need $10,000 in student debt relief as part of their recovery from the pandemic.
