Local Britney Griner teammates continue call for her return from Russia

A couple of Brittney Griner’s fellow Olympic gold medalists are beyond anxious to get her home from Russia.  Northwest Newsradio’s Ryan Harris talked one-on-one with them. Scroll down for video of the interviews.

With the Seattle Storm in solid position to make the postseason, this is a weight they’ll all carry into the playoffs, including Sue Bird, who tells us Griner’s guilty plea can speed up the legal process and, she hopes, allow the Biden Administration to do what Sue says they need to do.  “The message here is for players in the WNBA, for people who know Brittney’s story, regardless of if you’re an athlete or not,” Bird says, “is just to continue to talk about it, keep her in the forefront, so that the [Biden] Administration knows we’re going to support whatever they need to do to bring her home because, ultimately, that’s all we all want – for her to be home, to be safe and healthy.”

Breanna Stewart and Brittney Griner are friends and both played for the same Russian team, so Stewie has been understandably worried about what her friend is going through.  “For her to be there over 140 days and counting isn’t right,” Stewart says, “and she needs to be back home safe with her family, and we miss her.  The league isn’t the same without her.

Stewart is also asking for as much help adding signatures to the Change.org petition calling for Griner to be returned safely to the U.S. as she can get. So far, close to 325,000 names have been added.
