Today In History: A New Connector Is Born

On this day in history, August 27th.  In 1913, Swedish-American engineer Gideon Sundback applied for a patent on the all-purpose zipper, a small invention with a big impact. In 1964, Mary Poppins premiered at Grauman’s Chinese Theatre, enchanting audiences with its magical blend of music and imagination. Guitar legend Jimi Hendrix recorded his final studio track, “Slow Blues,” in 1970 at Electric Lady Studios in New York. Country star Garth Brooks released No Fences in 1990, which would become Billboard's Album of the Year in 1991. In a rare celestial event, Mars came closer to Earth in 2003 than it had in nearly 60,000 years. In 2008, history was made when Barack Obama became the first African-American nominated for U.S. President by a major party. And in 2012, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis dropped “Thrift Shop,” a quirky anthem that would go on to top charts and win two Grammys. That’s today’s Almanac, on Northwest Newsradio.
