Ivermectin has ‘no significant effects’ in treating Covid, study finds

A large-scale scientific study published in the New England Journal of Medicine showed what health experts have been warning for a long time now – that ivermectin, the anti-parasite drug used to treat large farm animals in this country, has “no significant effects” in treating COVID.

“There have been so many studies done on ivermectin, and all the ones that were well designed and reputable showed it didn’t work,” said Dr. John Swartzberg, an expert on infectious disease at the UC Berkeley School of Public Health, who was not involved in this study. “But this was the first one that was done with a very large number of people, completely double blind, placebo controlled, sort of a gold standard study.”

The saga of ivermectin, and its widespread use as an alternative treatment – without any evidence – shows the danger of rejecting science and following medical advice provided by podcast hosts and social media celebrities.

“The lesson is that you have to really be careful about the information that you take in regard to how to diagnose, treat or prevent COVID,” Dr. Swartzberg said. “It’s a brand-new disease to get safe, solid answers, it requires good, robust scientific studies. I know everybody gets impatient, but that doesn’t mean you just take a drug that’s offered to you by a friend, a neighbor, the internet. You need to get information from solid, good sources.”
