If you get covid, there are antiviral drugs you can take that can greatly reduce your chances of being hospitalized or dying.
“We all remember the days when we got COVID and there was really nothing to do but chicken soup and fluids and prayer,” said Dr. John Swartzberg, an expert in infectious disease at the UC Berkeley School of Public. “Now we really can intervene, particularly for those folks who may be predisposed to a worse outcome.”
Unfortunately, these new lifesaving medications are not always being prescribed. Doctors may not know about them, and supplies have been limited.
On Tuesday, the Biden administration announced it had secured 20 million more doses of Paxlovid, the antiviral treatment from Pfizer. The plan is to get them to pharmacies around the country as soon as possible.
By the way, my wife and I took Paxlovid when we got breakthrough cases a few weeks ago. It made us feel significantly better in a few days.
If you get Covid, especially if you’re feeling really sick, don’t sit home and suffer. Talk to your doctor about getting Paxlovid, or one of the other treatments available.
“If you’re a candidate for one of these medications, you need to make sure that you take it quickly,” Dr. Swartzberg said. “You don’t want to wait too long because they won’t work well.”
With Paxlovid you need to start the medication within five days of getting COVID.
