We keep learning more about the long-term effects of Covid-19. A recent study by researchers at the University of Oxford, published in the British medical journal Lancet Psychiatry, shows that Covid can cause serious neurological problems.
The researchers analyzed health data from more than 1 million people around the world.
“This is a very important study,” said Dr. John Swartzberg, an expert on infectious diseases at the UC Berkeley School of Public Health. “It looked at a lot of data, and really brought together a lot of information that we didn’t previously have about the neurological effects of Covid on the brain.”
The study found a Covid infection can increase the risk of brain disorders, including common psychiatric disorders, epilepsy, psychosis, even cognitive defects – what people describe as brain fog.
“And this could occur up to two years after contracting Covid,” Dr. Swartzberg said. “Adults, in particular, seem to be predisposed with having lasting problems with brain fog, which is something that concerns all of us.”
