On this day in history, November 13, 1927, the Holland Tunnel opened, becoming the world’s first underwater vehicular tunnel and connecting New York and New Jersey. In 1940, Walt Disney’s groundbreaking animated feature Fantasia premiered in New York, dazzling audiences with its blend of classical music and animation. In 1971, NASA’s Mariner 9 made history as the first spacecraft to orbit another planet, Mars. Fast forward to 2006, when ground was broken for a new memorial on the National Mall honoring Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and that same year, Google finalized its $1.65 billion acquisition of YouTube. In 2017, Barbie introduced a doll wearing a hijab, celebrating cultural diversity. A year later, in 2018, history was made again as The Harvard Crimson named its first Black woman president.
