On this day in history, November 6th, 1860, Abraham Lincoln was elected President of the United States, setting the stage for a pivotal chapter in American history. In 1928, Herbert Hoover’s election victory became the first message ever transmitted over the electric news sign atop the New York Times building in New York City. In 1947, Meet the Press made its debut on NBC as a local program in Washington, D.C., beginning what would become the longest-running show on U.S. television. In 2001, Kiefer Sutherland starred in the debut of 24 on Fox, redefining the real-time action drama. The hit musical Jersey Boys opened on Broadway in 2005 to rave reviews, celebrating the story and songs of Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons. In 2012, Elizabeth Warren became the first female senator from Massachusetts, and Tammy Duckworth, representing Illinois, made history as the first disabled woman and first person born in Thailand elected to Congress. Six years later, in 2018, Jared Polis of Colorado became the nation’s first openly gay governor. And in a lighter note from 2008, thanks to internet voting, Rick Astley won “Best Act Ever” at the MTV Europe Music Awards — leading producers to declare, “We’ve been well and truly Rickrolled.” And that’s today’s Almanac, on Northwest Newsradio.
